The Norakert settlement of the Vardenis consolidated community is located about 4 km from the eastern shore of Lake Sevan. The village was founded in 1927 by Armenians who migrated from the villages of Sghert and Ov in the Khizan province of Bitlis Vilayet in 1915.

Currently, Norakert has 866 residents in 258 households. Among the many economic and social problems in the village, the primary one was the lack of access to drinking water. The catchment system serving the settlement was built in 1981 in the village of Akunk, 35 km from Norakert, and had never been renovated since then. It was in a very poor condition.

The outer walls were dilapidated, as a result of which wastewater, and sometimes harmful substances, penetrated the reservoir, endangering the health of the population. The covers were missing, the fence was missing, the pipes were corroded, causing a large loss of water, the door lock was broken, and sanitary conditions were not provided.

With the donation of the “Yalkezian” Foundation, the “Shen” NGO began the repair work of the water supply. The community also actively participated, attracting the necessary equipment for the repair. As a result of the repair of the catchment, the necessary sanitary and hygienic conditions for domestic use of water were ensured. It became possible to save water, which increased the volumes of water supplied.

After many years of waiting, finally, the population of Norakert, as well as the neighboring settlement of Akunk and the city of Vardenis, uses clean drinking water.
